DuPont Packaging has announced expansion of its DuPont™ Biomax© Strong family of polymer additives to include an FDA compliant grade for food contact applications. DuPont™
Biomax© Strong polymer additives improve the performance of bio-based polylactic acid (PLA) packaging. Considered a sustainable alternative to petrochemical-derived products, PLA is
derived from renewable agricultural products.

New DuPont™ Biomax© Strong 120 is a polymer additive that toughens PLA packaging materials while maintaining compliance with food contact requirements in the United States (set by
the Food and Drug Administration or FDA), and in Europe. A similar additive was introduced in August 2006 for non-food applications. Both grades of Biomax© Strong provide improved
toughness performance with minimal reduction in package clarity.

As a performance modifier in PLA, DuPont™ Biomax© Strong enhances impact strength, flexibility and melt stability – especially important in rigid applications such as cast sheets for
thermoforming and injection molding. When Biomax© Strong is used at recommended levels (1-5 wt%) in PLA, packaging made with the additive outperforms traditional products with minimal
impact on haze or transparency.
